Process of Photosynthesis

Updated: Jul 20, 2023

Plants are natural beauty. Plants are very special organisms. They make their own food! This process in which plants make their own food is known as "Photosynthesis". The process of making food in the plants starts with the absorption of sunlight by the leaves.

What does photosynthesis means?

Photo is a Greek word which means light and synthesis, another Greek word means making with. So photosynthesis means "making with light". This process takes place in the leaves. In the palisade cell present in the palisade mesophyll. Plants need few things to start this process:

  1. Sunlight: (plants absorb sunlight with the help of chloroplasts)

  2. Carbon dioxide: (plants find carbon dioxide from their surroundings)

  3. Water: (roots absorb water and transport it to the leaves)

Process:-

Roots and Stem:

From the soil, roots absorb water and minerals and transport it to the stem. The stem transfer the water to the leaves through the petiole, while minerals are used where it is needed, in the plant. The stem holds the leaves in such a position that they absorb maximum sunlight.

Leaves:

Simultaneously, leaves absorb sunlight through their lamina. The carbon dioxide enters the leaves through the tiny opening called stomata. The water in the leaves, transported through the xylem vessels in the stem and the carbon dioxide absorbed by the stomata passes through the air spaces, and enter into the palisade cells containing chloroplast, (chlorophyll). These materials are absorbed by the chloroplast. The energy in the chloroplast because of the absorption of sunlight is used to "synthesis" glucose and oxygen from carbon dioxide and water. Just like humans have respiration system, plants also d0.

*Word equation for the reaction in plants during this process:

Carbon dioxide + water ----------- Glucose + oxygen.

(absorbed from the surroundings)+(absorbed by the roots)-----(used by the plants)+(released in the surroundings)

These products diffuses out of the cell containing chloroplast. The oxygen escapes through the stomates into the surrounding ( very essential for living organisms) and glucose, which is transported through the vessels called phloem, is used by the parts of plants which needs it and the process repeats.

Process of photosynthesis

Summary:

In the process of photosynthesis, plants make their own food. They use carbon dioxide and water to make glucose and oxygen with the help of the sunlight.

This process is very important for living beings as plants takes in carbon dioxide and gives out oxygen which keeps the environment clean and fresh.
