Circulatory System

Do you know what causes coronary diseases? In the previous lesson, we learnt about the entire process, of how blood flows in the whole heart (click here to visit the previous lesson). In this lesson of circulatory system, we will learn about the risk factors which cause coronary diseases.

There are 5 risk factors which cause coronary diseases.

Risk Factors:

Junk Food:

Junk food is one of the causes. Fatty foods contain cholesterol which deposits in the lumen of arteries which makes the lumen narrower, hence less blood is supplied to the heart which weakens the muscles and causes cardiac attack. Cholesterol deposits in the lumen causes clot in the blood which blocks the valves, resulting in high chances of heart attack.

Age Factor:

Age factor is another major cause. With increasing age, artery walls get stiff and are

unable to bear the high blood pressure. Stress increases the blood pressure which can injure

the coronary walls and can cause leakage of blood. It also affects more with an increasing age.

Gender:

Blood pressure is also affected by gender. Males have particularly high blood pressure and are more likely to be affected by cardiovascular diseases.

Smoking:

Smoking contains Tar, a substance which accumulates in the lumen of arteries, making it narrower, and increasing the risk of cardiac attack by reducing the blood supply to the heart.

Genetics:

Genetic problems are also a major reason. Some diseases like diabetes cause high blood

pressure and hardening of walls.
